Name: Bernadetta von Varley
Door: Door pass, submissive

Canon: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Canon Point: post-Crimson Flower, immediately after the final fight against the Immaculate One

Age: 23 (Post-Timeskip)
Appearance: Post-Timeskip Bernadetta

History: Bernie on the FE Wiki
CR AU (Optional): N/A

Personality:
(+) Passionate:
When Bernadetta likes something, she really really likes it - and gets really good at it. She's a creative girl that likes to embroider and draw and paint and write stories and take care of plants - things that, when she gets good at them, can actually help her feel confident and even facilitate her conversations with the main character (Byleth) and with other characters. She shares an embroidered pin with Hubert as a sign of friendship, sews up torn clothes for Leonie, can eventually talk about stories she'd written with Sylvain, draws and paints in quiet when she spends time with Linhardt, gardens with Edelgard. When given the space and permission to like her odd little hobbies and interests, when she sees it's okay to have and pursue these quirks, she's able to actually spend time outside her room with other people. This helps her make connections (whether she's aware of it or not) and helps people get to know the kind of person she is outside of her panicked reactions and impulse to assume the worst in people. Given the opportunity to open up, people discover that she likes a lot of things, gets passionate and is good at a lot of these things, and she's encouraged to share her passions and projects with others.

(-) Anxious
Bernie's biggest struggle is how she automatically assumes the worst in what people see or think of her. This is seen repeatedly over her initial interactions with a lot of the other characters. In her B support with Byleth, Bernie reveals that when she'd been brought up by her father (training her to be a marriageable wife), he told her constantly how useless she was, that she couldn't do anything right. It happened so much and so often that she often fears that others think the same - that she's stupid and useless, that of course people would find her weird or worthless, and because of that no one would want to marry her. These anxieties keep her from actually listening to others when they try to convince her otherwise. When Edelgard tries to explain that she wasn't mad at her, Bernie only says (of herself): Nobody wants you around! Stupid!. When Linhardt finds her painting and mentions off hand that Bernie's usually in her room, her first response is to apologize for bothering him and to say she better leave because she must be in his way. When Dorothea and Petra (separately) offer to be a friend, Bernie has the similar responses that of course they probably won't/shouldn't befriend her.
By the time the timeskip rolls around (and latter levels of support chains have unlocked), we see that she isn't as likely to jump to conclusions anymore. She either apologizes for how she'd previously acted, or tries to actually stop and listen when characters talk to her or explain themselves to her. She's not always successful, but she tries!

(-) Suspicious
An offshoot of her anxieties is that when people do approach her, if she's not assuming they don't want her around or assuming they think she's useless - her next conclusion is that they're out to hurt her in some way. They must be out to trick her, make a fool of herself, or actively hurt her. The way her thought process jumps doesn't always make sense, but somehow it always involves loudly accusing others of scheming against her, and that she should scheme right back to the same degree (sometimes violently!) Ferdinand trying to get her out of her room isn't kind, it's intrusive (yes) and just a plot to mess with her, so she sprains his wrist when she tries to get away. Linhardt isn't complimenting her painting, he's tricking her so that she will get complacent so that he can get better than her until he can replace her(..?? Bernie how). Sylvain read her writing sneakily and wanted to ask when she'd write more, but because he was sneaky about it the only way to make him forget her work is if she simply just burns(!!) him instead. ... Bernie doesn't always make sense when her fears and overactive imagination run away from her. Unfortunately she's rather loud about these suspicions and accusations, which often leads to confusion and misinterpretation, and her friends failing to get through to her.

(-) Reclusive
A result of the above is that Bernie's convinced it's just simpler not to interact with anyone. She's learned to be happiest and most at peace when she's alone. And while it's fine to be an introvert, she takes it to the extreme and is something of a recluse. Something unique to Bernie in the game is that during the game's free travel portions (where Byleth gets to explore the Monastery), Byleth (and other characters) doesn't actually see her in common areas - the way you see or interact with Bernie outside of cut scenes is through her closed door, because she won't leave her room. It's safer in there where she can be alone with the things that make her happy. She can read or paint in peace where no one will critique her, she can garden and take care of her carnivorous plants with no one to call her weird. Plants don't yell at her, as she tells Edelgard; they don't yell and they won't hurt her.
But by the time of timeskip for Crimson Flower (and only for Crimson Flower), Bernie is actually outside her room consistently! She still admits in her support conversations that it's easier for her to be alone or to spend time in her room as a sure, safe space. But she tries a little harder to be around people and her friends - who she recognizes have helped her become brave, see the world, and discover more of herself and what she can be when she's with others.
It's never actually explained why this only happens in the Crimson Flower route, but it's typically speculated it's because it's the route where her father is explicitly put under house arrest by Edelgard and Hubert and they promise to abolish the Crest system (and since they're enemies in other routes, the fate of her father is more uncertain and value of Crests would remain - making her hide away.)

Powers and Abilities:
Bernadetta's natural weapon strengths lie in archery (bows), lances and in horseback riding. This makes her a good bow-knight! A unique skill she has is Pass (which allows her to pass through enemy units to attack from an opposite side, or simply get past them to other enemies), which is supported by her natural inclination to sneak off whenever possible.

She is also a crested noble. She inherited the Crest of Indech, which put in the simplest terms, allows her to strike an extra time during combat (so if she manages two moves due to a combat arte, she strikes one extra time more.) In more practical terms, this means she gets occasional bursts of speed and agility to get more hits in, no matter what weapon she's wielding (fires more arrows in quick succession, strikes with swords and lances more quickly, swings an axe an extra time, lands more punches as a brawler.)

This speed also tracks with her personality of being quick to run off and escape. However, this isn't a voluntary skill that she can control (in game, it's technically up to chance.) Something I think she can explore during her time in Duplicity is if this is, actually, controllable. She's never had reason or motivation to control it, since she has mostly resented being Crested for how it's dictated her life (a supposedly eligible candidate for marriage, which is why her father trained her so hard to be a good wife.)

She also has a unique ability called Persecution Complex where, for some reason, her strength (her crit-rate) gets a boost the more wounded she is (the nore HP she loses.) So the more physically hurt she is, the harder she hits. This is supported really well by a Lance skill she learns easily (Vengeance, which if she wields a lance at non-full HP, she gets an attack buff.) Essentially... Bernie canonly does a lot better when she's hurt!
